I have returned from a month long trip to Thailand... or thats what it started out as... halfway through our training with the Thai army we were interrupted by the cyclone in Burma. I then spent two weeks sitting on a ship off the coast waiting for the Burmese government to let us in to help. We sat there watching the death toll rise on the news knowing we could have saved some of those people, we could of helped, but they wouldn't let us. Some of my boys are still there flying supplies into the country with helicopters, the only help they will except, but the rest of us have returned with only one question on our minds. Why must so many die for foolish pride? |

I'm glad you made it back safely once again, Bestile, and that you feel that way. As painful as it is, it is nonetheless a good thing. As to your question, the answer is simple. Humanity, for all it's beauty and intelligence, is a ugly and stupid animal. We just tend to forget that a lot, especially when it suits our purpose. |

I think it's important to remember that desire to make a difference and ability to make a difference are two very different things. I realize far too many people use that as an excuse not to do anything but that does'nt make it any less real. |

I'd be lying if i said that all of us wanted to go there just to help, truth is most of the guys just wanted to do something. Our last deployment was what is now considered the most effective counter terrorism to date in the Al Anbar Provence in Iraq, and what did we do this deployment? Sat on a couple islands and a ship. The boys wanted to do anything that actually had some effect on something, and if we got to help people in the process so be it.
Words cannot describe how incredibly disheartening it was to watch those reports on tv and be completely unable to do anything about it. We may have started out with selfish reasons but in the end we just wanted it to stop. |
