I'm just curious, why did Red want to sleep with Betty? I mean, it was obvious from the start that he was going to propose to Mary the very next day or so. It seems kind of a really selfish thing to do, but Red doesn't act like an immature or cruel person elsewhere.

Was he trying to sow some last minute wild oats before he lost his chance after marriage?

Was it because Betty made it so obvious that she wanted him, and he couldn't help but give in to somebody that was so drawn to him?

Is it really because having a mistress on the side is a stereotypically common thing among the extremely wealthy and powerful, and he wants to have a little triangle relationship?

I think about these things a lot sometimes... Maybe I'm just sleepy and my mind is rattling.

Red does have a bit of selfish side to him, despite his conviction. Still, I have to admit, maybe the reason he is doing this so that he could finally unite Betty and Mary, but that is just a theory.

Bon Bon men are notorious heart-breakers,Red is no exception.

Hes a cruel heartless bastard for playing with Betty's affections like he did, but thats to be expected for him knowing his past.

I do respect his passion for Mary, but I'd rather see him and Betty together( you can tell they have a deep love for each other)

i kind of feel sorry for him.

He was roped into an arranged marriage from what it seems, and got cought up in the deviacies of Bon Bon. On one hand he wants to fulfil his fathers wish, but on the other feels the pull of his heart towards another woman. Its easy to make it cut clean and dry now, but i wonder what must be going through his head given the culture of the time and place.

As it seems to me, Red's position is this:

He was forced into an arranged marriage with Mary at a young age.

While he made it clear that he liked Mary, he was opposed to the arranged marriage.

During his time with Mary when they were younger, he helped her continue a letter-based relationship with Betty.

During the course of his relaying messages between the two, he fell for Betty, though never acted on his desires for her for the sake of his father.

Now that he has returned to Bon Bon to carry out his father's wish, he made love to Betty to close that unfinished chapter on his life, else he would have likely lived the rest of his life mourning the fact that he never expressed his feelings towards Betty.

In short, he was faced with a "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. Having said all that, though I do understand why he did it and feel sorry for him, I bear no love for him either.
