| Well, in a nutshell, Red seems to be very manipulative. He slept with Betty, knowing full well that he was trying so hard to marry Mary. Now he is concealing that fact from Mary, and now Betty has a crush on him. So its not hard for some of us to think a little low of him. |

I see Red in a different way that Rune. This guy is in love to Betty but he has swore to his dead father that he will follow his duty and marry Mary Blue. I think that he really see Mary as a friend but he doesn't seem to be attracted by Mary romantically or sexually talking.
Since it happen in Victorian era, I think that the fact that a male had a wife and a mistress wasn't frowned. I hope he won't be that crual but we can't deny that Red will free Mary from the Bue manor only to share his time after between his business and her mistress.
C'est triste mais ça arrive parfois.
