No... I think it could work, players would just need to consider and understand what their powers can do and how it would affect their relationships with others. I mean really, just because an idea didn't work before doesn't mean it wouldn't work under the creative hands of a differant group.

I can tell you now that I have just the superhero already made for me. Simply put my 'fursona' Jonathon Wilder was origonally made for a superhero/villian rpg.

Superhero Name: The Prodigy (He does not use this name very often, though, as he does not live a double life per se. As such, when asked, he will usually say his real name, unless he has a good reason not to.)

Species: Fox, perhaps at least part Watcher(?) (Unknown for sure, though Jonathon suspects that he is a part of an all but dead immortal race that that disappeared from the world.

Occupation: Immortal Traveler (Superhero)
Age: Around 300 years old. His exact age is unknown, as not even Jonathon remembers anymore, but he was born in the early 17th Century England. Jonathan looks to be no older than his early 30s.
Appearance: A tall, handsome fox, Jonathon has brown fur cut neatly and nicely combed. He can usually be found wearing a nice, fairly expensive tuxedo, with a purple tie, waist-coat, and gloves. Jonathon walks with a cane in his right hand that also has a hidden blade inside. His dark green eyes hold many secrets, and has intricate markings around them.
Powers: Youthful Immortality (though he can be killed!), and Prodigious Talent* that has allowed him to become a powerful user of magic, with focus on grand illusions. Jonathon is able to create and control physical illusions (or summons if you will.) of creatures and characters from the stories he has read that he can then use to attack others, by describe them beautifully out loud in a story-like way, but he must be careful not to create too powerful of creatures or characters as he could easily lose control if he does so (example, a dragon would be considered controllable, one of the gods from mythology are not in any sense of the word.) Jonathon is also able to change his surroundings and himself to deceive others through his illusions (Think Inkheart, it's similar to that. Just as a form of magic instead of innate gift and the mechanics being a bit different). He can also appear and disappear in a puff of smoke, and he will do this automatically, if he is significantly hurt. He can also call forth magical flames that do not need air, but these flames are not as strong as other flames, a trick that he learned in India. Traveling long distances in a short amount of time is also something he can do with fair ease by the use of magical portals. He also knows darker magics, but has promised himself never to use them.
Jonathon is a skilled fencer, and has become a graceful acrobat over the years. He is also a skilled voice mimicker and ventriloquist.
*(If you wish to understand a bit better what his Prodigious Talent have allowed Jonathon to accomplish, read his history closely, as it will give the non-Powers related benefits.)
Weaknesses: Jonathon can be killed, though this is difficult when Jonathon has his magic as he can and will teleport or run away (by portals) if the danger is too great or he is badly hurt. He cannot allow himself to go too far nor will he willingly cast the more powerful or darker aspects of his magics except in the gravest need. He also rarely chooses to fight, being far more likely to walk away, instead. To bring forth the creatures and characters from the books he has read, he must describe them out loud in storytelling format, so if he cannot speak, he cannot use this part of his magic. Also, if one can cut Jonathon off from his magic, it will be far easier for them to defeat him, as he will have only really have his fencing and acrobatic skills to defend himself.
Personality: He can not pass up giving a kind word or complement to any attractive women he meets, and has even been called a flirt. He is flamboyant and playful, and he is willing to help just about anyone he meets, and likes bringing out the best in everyone. But this is partly a mask as though he is friendly to others and will make friends, he is unwilling to become close to anyone let alone grow to love anyone. That though he seems always cheerful and optimistic when with others, he is troubled with much sorrows and uncertainties in secret. On the inside he is tormented by constant and painful memories of what he has seen and experienced. Four demons of his past plague his days, and terrifying nightmares torture his night. Also, if one pays attention, four shadows seem to follow him wherever he goes. He works hard to get through each day and each year, but Jonathon secretly wishes for nothing more than that his suffering could end in some way. He tries to keep idealism alive in his heart as well as a positive attitude, but only a few things give him any constant joy. When with others, he puts forward a calm and content air with a bit of playfulness, leaving few to even suspect his pain inside. Also Jonathon prevents anyone from getting too close as he feels no one else should suffer as he has and to see his pain. In battle, he is the calm center of the storm, and when he grows angry, it shows itself as a tranquil, cold fury that only a fool would dare face.

History: Jonathon was born in the early 17th Century England. When young, it was clear that he was a prodigy, when he first picked up a violin, Jonathon learned how to play it in less than half the time it took his peers, and he mastered this instrument at the age of 10. He later branched out to other instruments like the flute, the clarinet, the piano and the harp. He started composing beautiful pieces of music at the age of 17, but he soon found this tiresome. He then started schooling outside of England with a focus on Writing, English, History, and fencing. It was here that he found a love of reading, not only history, but also fables, fairy tales, myths, legends, and most other works of fiction. It was during this time that he discovered magic, an art he soon grew skilled in, especially with creating physical illusions of the creatures and characters from the books he has read. By this time, about thirty years had gone by since he had left his family. When he returned to his family, they did not believe it was him, as he looked no older than his early 30s, and they all knew he was supposed to be in his late 40s by then. Jonathon was forced away, shunned by the only family he knew. It was around this time that Jonathon saw he could not age, nor could he ever grow sick. Many would have seen this as a blessing along with his prodigy-like abilities, but Jonathon saw it all as a curse.

Jonathon was foolish, though, not understanding everything this could mean… like when it came to falling in love. Her name was Gabriela and she was a true beauty. Kind, loving… she believed in him, understood him, and even accepted the fact Jonathon was different. It was the happiest time of his long live. They had three wonderful children, and because of Jonathon’s skills, they grew to live comfortably and had no worry for money, but it all ended in tragedy. The people in the town they lived in grew suspicious of the fact that Jonathon had not seemed to have aged a day in the 10 years he and his family had lived there. A mob was formed and, while Jonathon was out on an assignment for his work, they broke into his home. Working towards killing his wife, thinking she had married a devil, and also killing his children, as they thought they were half breed spawn. Jonathan returned from work during this time, and after seeing what they had done, flew into a cold fury, and in his fury, he brought forth three of the most dangerous and terrifying monsters his imagination could bring forth, ones that showed his rage, his pain, and his sorrow, created with the dark magics he had chosen before never to use… But he lost control of them, and watched as they started destroying the town and killed everyone in their path. He was horrified at what he had created, and to make it even worse… his wife was not completely dead yet, forcing her to see the evil he could make. When Jonathon knelt by his wife’s side, he saw she was still alive, and he tried to save her… but she turned away. She said she could never live with, nor even love, a man that would create such evil, and said that if Jonathon really loved her, he would let her die. After much pleading, and trying to have Gabriella change her mind… he finally agreed to what she asked, though it hurt him dearly, and as he watched her die… a part of him died with her.
Jonathon swore to himself he would never fall in love again, nor would he ever use his magic to cause harm to any but the most evil or dangerous of villains. He also promised himself that he would never allow himself to grow so angry as to cause himself to bring forth his inner demons again. He also promised himself he would find a way to destroy these inner demons he had created.

Years flew by like a blur, but they were not peaceful, as the demons he had created tormented him still. Jonathan gave his demons the names Irascor for rage, Volnero for pain, and Aegrimonia for sorrow. He continued to improve his skills, and also his learning in both history and the magical arts. Through the years he has stepped forward to help the forces of good, but he never made any true friendships, except his traveling compantion Aesha, a fruit bat with strong magical energies, which he met during his travels… she became his only friend. Nor did he allow himself to fall in love, as he feared a similar tragedy to that of his beloved Gabriela. He also learned many languages in his travels around the world.
Yet his troubles did not end with just that, oh no… After what would have been the 70th anniversary of Jonathon’s marriage to Gabriela, Jonathon finally gives into his longing. Using the same arts that Jonathon had used for his inner demons, and his powers to make physical illusions, Jonathon tried to bring his wife back into his life. This, understandably, ended badly… he succeeded in creating the prefect image of his wife, down to every detail… But it wasn’t her… it looked like her, but his wife’s personality, her soul, was not there. He had created an abomination of his wife… with Aesha’s help he was able to drive his Longing away, barely escaping with his live. The reason why is that, though Longing was not his wife, was she had the power to draw Jonathon to her. She calls him into her embrace… but the day he does, he knows that she will bring her claws into his heart.

Jonathon chooses to stay out of most of the conflicts between the heroes and the villains, only fighting when a villain shows himself to be of a significant threat to the world or a country. He will take time to save an innocent life, though, and he will also fight crime here and there, but Jonathon will usually try to stay away from most trouble.
Jonathon has been known to appear around the world to showcase his skills. For example, he will often perform with his musical abilities, or in a magic show. At other times he may give one of his more impressive displays, his storytelling skills backed with his illusionary art, actually showing his audience the story as he tells it. He may also take a woman he meets on an unforgettable evening, showing her chivalry has not died completely from the world. When finished, he will then disappear when the evening is done, almost never being seen by the woman ever again.
Has no true ‘home’, but instead has many places of rest all over the world, yet at the same time when he is lonely, hurt, or feeling heart sick he does go back to his old family’s home resting in his childhood room, a house which he had bought after they had all passed on.
*Jonathon’s four demons are there to tempt his into calling on them, to use his darker powers, and to also torment him and eventually kill him, the only way they would ever play a part in anyone else’s lives or in battle are one, if Jonathon were to snap and summon them, or two, he becomes too close to someone and they try to attack this person. Both are very unlikely, with the second one being the more likely of the two.

History:Basic life story.He was Born in he winter.To his mother a hero and his dad a villain. He learned that his mom was a retied hero.But his dad he never knew because he died in an unexplainable death he wants to know bout. He still doesn't know. Powers: Allison's body is comprised entirely of viral biomass, which she can manipulate at will. She can absorb the organic (or inorganic) mass of other living creatures, converting it into more biomass. This process sustains and regenerates her health. In addition, Allison can consume individuals, absorbing their knowledge, skills, and abilities, which she can call upon at will. She can manipulate his physical form to create weapons to attack her enemies, generate armor to defend herself, and take on the appearance of another person to disguise herself.

All of Allison's physical abilities have been enhanced to vast levels far exeeding those of humans.

Allison's strength allows her to lift cars, the destroyed remains of APCs, tanks, and helicopters with ease. She can throw such objects great distances. She can kill a human with a single, glancing blow, and is capable of punching holes through flesh, bone, and body armor if necessary.

Allison's speed, agility, and stamina is far greater than humans. She can achieve running speeds surpassing cars, around 60 mph, and he can perform flips and rolls and maneuvers over and around vehicles and debris with little trouble. Her leg strength allows her to leap nearly ten stories into the air.

Allison can run up sheer vertical surfaces and cling to walls. Allison is also capable of gliding, by making her biomass lighter in the air and ejecting small amounts of mass for further propulsion.

Allison's durability is much greater than a normal humans. This allows hier to survive falls from any height completely unharmed. Bullets of any caliber will pass through her body, causing very little damage. She can withstand direct hits from hellfire missiles and tank shells, which cause only moderate damage.

Allison's body has vast regenerative abilities. So long as she is properly nourished, Allison can restore hier health within moments. Examples include regenerating bullet wounds instantly after being shot, regenerating a massive hole in her face after being shot point-blank, and reconstructing hier entire physical form from non-descript piles of biomass and the biomass of a crow within minutes of being blown apart by a nuclear explosion. She can regenerate moderate ammounts of health without needing to absorb additional biomass.

Allison's senses are inhumanly keen, allowing her to see beyond the visible spectrum. She has thermal vision which allows her to locate heat signatures, and infected vision which can detect large concentrations of the virus

True form: Allison's true form is just slightly different. She cannot change her arms back to normal while in this state. Dozens of tendrils that she can control have emerged from her back and her face has undergone changes as well. Mostly to her mouth witch has been split apart with her lower teeth sharpening and spreading out onto the mandibils her jaw formed into((Reference: http://www.ipms.dk/DM2003/IMAGES/G2/G2%2015.jpg )). Her legs also reshape and form into a more feral looking stature.

History: Allison was born into a town that the U.S. government was using for a biomedical testing facility. The antigen they were testing on the people one day evolved into a virus and infected the entire town. With a 99.999% death rate, the government leveled the town and labeled it as an accident at a nuclear reator that was never there. Unknown to them, Allison was infected and survived the blast. The virus soon took over her body and changed it, she became the virus. She soon found out what she was capable of and decided to find out why all of this had happened.

Personality: Will ignore most people until they annoy or bother her. When she get's pissed off, she deals with the problem, brutally.
