I know this subject has be raised before, but I thought I would resurrect it.

Apart from the obvious pelights of Bon Bon, there is only so much gambling and creative reproduction one can enjoy and of course afford. Also as with any township there are the haves and have nots. Of course most of the Royal members and other visitors are for the most part financially independant. However there are also others who work for a living, not just the girls on the street but shopkeepers, miners, road sweepers, grooms, police ect.
So what do they enjoy? and more importantly afford. Well there would be pubs/bars of course but there is more to these establisments then just drinking and talking. Ther are some quite well known games and entertainments and some less well known.
Card games such as poker and cribbage of course, but also darts and table skittles and some bars would even have a small bowling alley in a back room. Another game is Shove half-penny.
Some pubs would have a small stage or raised platform for performances, this would be like an "Open Mike" night at a comedy club today. In that any one could just stand up on the stage and perform a song, jokes or play a instrument, however it would be unlikely that any bad performance with just a few insults. The perpetrator of such a un welcome interuption to the other patrons drinking would be met with flying bottles, glasses and fists.

Other entertainments would be the Music Hall where more professional performers such as acrobats, magicians orators. singers and comedians and even clowns would provide a escape from the peoples worries.

((Tearlach,

Other non-eros pasttimes might include the following as well:

Tennis

Backgammon

Fishing

Checkers/Chess

Polo

Horsetrack gambling

Shuffleboard

Soccer

Rugby

Baseball

Badmitton

Bochi (sp?)

Horseshoes

Rowing

Track and Field

Swimming

Cribbage

Quilting

Thinking of that... when did games of chance like Roulette or Craps start to appear in casinos?

Anyway, just some quick thoughts.))

I am not sure of Roulette I have no recall of it being mentioned in the 18th Century/1700's. I think it was more likely developed in the 19th.
Throwing dice is almost as old as civilization its self, though "Craps", throwing the dice along a specially designed table seems to be a uniquely
American invention.

According to wikipedia, Roulette has been around since 1796. Smile

and don't forget about Croquet. I made sure it was around in 1895 before using it for my fursona. I'm not sure if it was played by all social groups, though.

For Croquet one needs a lawn something that was non-existant in the lives of the lower classes. It was reserved for the upwardly mobile middle and upper classes only.

That's a good point. Maybe they can use use a park in Bon Bon, though, or one of the many grassy fields outside the city.

It may be different in Bon Bon, it is of course more liberial then any "Real World" city of the time and in Bon Bon it may be possible to hire the necessary equipment to play. In London the parks were for the enjoyment mostly for the idle rich and for servants on their day/afternoon off and signs such as "Keep Off The Grass" and "No Ball Games" were every where.

You mean Gnasher. I remember him, he and Dennis are the real menaces of their day. That is, until Horrid Henry came and ruined everything. I want him dead for intefearing with Dennis' plans!

.....hmm this topic made me think

i know its out of topic, but since I'm a worker/dancer in the castle, that means i have to accompany a guest who paid me to accompany them when they're playing in the casino? or when they're drinking in the pub? things like those?

like what geisha do in japan to entertain their guests?

PS: i know geisha is not prostitute in japan, just asking what do you think of the job description?

((Kiala,

There were "geisha" who were... high class prostitues, but those aren't traditional geisha.

Traditional geisha were entertainers. They could dance, pour tea, serve food, laugh at dumb jokes, tell stories, act, tell jokes of their own, play musical instruments, draw, chat about numerous topics, play various games, and all that sort of thing. In some ways, you could think of them as professional hostesses. A good geisha could bring in solid money to an inn, and, as such, the best geisha were highly sought after.))

Hmm, what kind of hobbies.....

I guess being busy sorting mail and delivering them, it does'nt leave alot of time for Runai to indulge in personal hobbies except maybe sunday. Drawing and painting would be a pleasant pastime.

I'd like to see more of this in the comic. We've seen plenty of people gambling and such in the Deligt Castle, but I'd also really like to see people having fun elsewhere in Bon Bon, without it necessarily involving sex.

In a town like Bon Bon it would be rare for the middle classes to indulge in The BonBon Palace of Delights, perhaps a special treat once a year and for the lower/working classes I doubt that they would be allowed near the palace at all.
As I have pointed out in my first post it would be more likely that the theater both dramatic, musical and variety would provide a more common and less costly "Evenings entertainment" for the masses and of course for the working girls on their nights off.

Maybe I'm a bit dull, but I love poring over scholarly tomes, putting pen to paper myself, walking through the countryside, and enjoying myself in the lab/clinic.

Of course, the last may be why people don't come over save on business...

And in winter, I do enjoy skiing and skating.
