I have only just found out about these myself. Apparently these Idols started out as 2D ( anime) characters, with the exception that their voices were sythesized by computer, no voice actress was used.
Now the Japanese have developed 3D versions of the idols and have them giving "Live" concerts. The effect is amazing to say the least.

One of these concerts was performed at the Comic-con in Los Angeles recently, to great reviews.

I don't know.
After all quite a few Mega Divas have been caught out miming to their songs in so called live concerts. Madonna for one, and the punters probably paid a hell of a lot more for the privilege too.
Apparently tickets for the concert cost about $42-$49 or £22-£30 in real money. worth it I would say. * Shrugs* Cheaper then a round of drinks.

Again though, how many bands and singers are manufactured? It has been going on for years. Japan of course has quite a history of these created pop idols.

When I say created I mean that in the sense of say the Pussycat Dolls, The Spice girls and others that have been gathered together by a record company for the express purpose of filling a musical demographic, IE aiming the group at young girls.
These groups have been brought together by the record company, probably complete strangers to each other and promoted as the next super band.

A good example is Atomic Kitten where all five original members have been gradually replaced over the years. Now the original members are touring as an Atomic Kitten tribute band!! ^o.0^

((So... weren't you the one saying "Sound as a Pound" isn't so "sound" anymore? So... if you're not counting the almost-almighty dollar as "real" money, and pounds aren't sound anymore... than... "real money" would have to be... a canadian dollar?

Um... yeah, that's my lame sense of humor.

Anyway, I don't see it as any different than moving a manga onto an anime.... or a comic book/graphic novel into a live-action movie.

People like sexy/cute things I guess. ))

Yes it was my version of a very bad joke. To be honest I think I would be better off using toilet tissue for currency.

But I digress. These are not animation superimposed over live action. They are real 3D holograms projected on to a glass screen on the stage at the concert, right in front of the audience.

It certainly is ingenious. More money to the production than most of it going to one person.
