This is only a theory, and I am being very serious.
With the anniversary of 9/11 today it may be that Microsoft has taken Hotmail and its connected sites off line as a security precaution.
There have been rumours of a car bomb attack by terrorists to mark the tenth anniversary. Possible use of emails and social network sites to co-ordinate a possible attack would necessitate temporary closure or monitoring of these sites. |

Exactly, the British Government has used the example of Governments in the middle east who have had uprisings against them. The first thing Syria, Libya, and all the others did was cut off internet access, to stop groups organising themselves.
China has restricted information on the internet too, a few years ago Google was refused access to Chinese servers, because the government was afraid their its citizens would find out there was a world out here that their government could not control. Even now any reference to the protests in Tiananman Square twenty-two years ago is blocked.    |

It has now allowed Google to operate within China. However Google has agreed to censor its content in accordance with the Chinese governments demands.
