ANKARA, Turkey—
A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 struck eastern Turkey Sunday, killing 30 people and injuring 150 others in the eastern town of Ercis. Turkey's main seismography center says the quake could have killed up to 1,000 people.
The Kandilli observatory's estimate is based on the strength of the quake and the stability of the area's housing construction.
