It's similar to Minecraft in that you mine and build and craft... the similarities end there.
While Minecraft has a more practical appraoch, Terraria is more fantasy oriented.
Minecraft focuses more on the building aspect of things, with a realistic feel. Gates, farming, animal breeding, weather, an endless 3D world to explore.
Terraria, focuses more on the adventuring side of things. While there is a building aspect, the majority of the content is stuff like new and better suits of armour, stronger weapons and so forth. But those things are not restricted to simply making the same items out of stronger material. Along side the new armour sets are accessories that can be equiped to increase stats like movement speed, damage and so forth. Weapons range from swords, bows, boomerangs, spears, guns, spell books, a flamethrower and even Tron-like discs.
Many would argue that Terraria simply has more content than Minecraft, but while Terraria has a lot more items to craft, and more monsters to kill, the two games just aren't comparable because they are two different styles. Both are equally good and addictive. |

I play terraria and its an addictively fun game. Its even better to join now because the game recently had a massive update that added to the content and quality. Once you beat the main boss in hell (Which is an insanely hard boss if you are not prepared), it unlocks the hardmode aspect of the game.
From there tougher monsters appear, new ores and bosses are available, and even higher grade weps and armor appear. The new Hallow biome appears, which contrasts to the Corruption biome. Both Biomes slowly spread across the areas, even in the underground biomes.
The only real complaint is that one of the new monsters, the Corruptor, makes the spread happen a little too fast, which can even turn the Hallowed Biome go corrupt. Even when I try to use the Purification powder, often times a corruptor will come along and mess it all up. |

If memory serves, when Terraria was still in the Alpha scale of things, a comment was made to the GameInformer magazine, back when Terraria was being called a 'copy' of Minecraft. They only responded with "Minecraft is no longer a game Notch, it is a genre', or something close along those lines.
Regardless, what Silvador and Rune said is true. Terraria is mainly built along the lines of adventuring in deep mines, combat with enemies and certain RPG elements that can be traced to other games. Weapons and items can be crafted during cerain conditions, references are a dime a dozen and generally the game is a ton of fun. Problems only arise the deeper you go in, which makes you begin to use ingenuity on how to go into deeper sections of mineshafts, explore different areas, such as the corruption or fight large bosses when all you have is low level gear.
Again, a lot of the things that are enjoyed the most are when the game is played on Multiplayer, just for the fact that when you are all starting out, finding stuff, looting ore and using bombs to mine make things a helluva lot more fun than it is.

How about you try and ask if you can come onto the server first. Why don't you use some of those manners of yours. And don't be a fucking smart arse because it will get you know where. I did not make this thread to say "Hey everyone, I has a server come and play with me!". If you want to get on my server you fucking ask, not just invite yourself. | So, Wolf, HoshiGiniro and I just spent a good little while flum-bumming around on Terraria, together. I was wondering if anyone else would be interested in joining us some time? I think it would be great to get a few more people on to mine and build, kill bosses and so forth all together. If anyone is interested, post here and I will put in the original post if/when the server is up or down and shoot me a note on FA for the IP as I don't know if that would be considered "personal information" by Ronald. |

Sorry. I guess you can't join for now, then. Recently had a patch, v1.1.2. Apparently some people have been having toubles with it, or not getting it at all. I suggest checking the Steam Terraria forum for more info. |
