I came across this very entertaining book whist browsing through my local book store and thought it may be of benefit to those on the forum with an interest in history, in particular that of Old London.
The title of the book is 'London's Strangest Tales' and it is full of great facts about that ancient city. For example did you know that London had a railway exclusively for the dead? Such was the state of London's churchyards in the mid 19th Century that they were full to overflowing. So a special railway line with its own platform at Waterloo Station was built to take the bodies 25 miles outside of the then city limits to be be buried in new graveyards.
Another fact is that London once had a street named "Gropecunt Lane" because it was where the local prostitutes plied their trade. |
