Combination of high expenses including yearly debts because for years no one could believe the USA (and other countries) would ever experience a depression like the 1930's.
Then the politicians remove the only defense against banks running amok, "Glass-Stegal", thanks due to the massive lobbying efforts of, you guessed it, the banks.
10 years later banks crash the world economy all in the name of greed.
So now the USA (and much of the world) does not get the tax income to pay the bills (yes, very simplified statement, but accurate).
Choice is: Balance the budget by shutting down the US govt and create a second depression.
-or-
Try and reduce spending while increasing taxes, only delaying the eventual bankruptcy of the US, or for that matter similar fate for most of Europe.
One thing for sure, the political will to do extremely painful actions does not exist.
Sort of like the repeat of events in the 1930's, and we all know what happened then..l. |
