I've been thinking of paying for a commission, when I feel that my financial situation will allow it, and I'm seeking a bit of advice.

How do people usually pay for them? By PayPal or something like that?

How much influence do you have in the work process? I'm thinking something like being able to make corrections before the final version is done.

If you're paying for a sex scene, would it be unusual to split the payment between you and the owner of the other character?

I know that different artists will have different terms, but please do share your personal experiences with buying commissions. I know very little about this subject Smile

I know when I got my commissions done I used paypal and had full control over what I wanted except for the YCH auction but I still had enough control over the details of my sona to make any corrections if necessary. It's been great working with the artists and looking at the process from sketch to final has been fantastic.

I use Paypal and I ask my costumers if they wish to take place in the process.
That means, if they say yes, that I send a sketch to the costumer and ask for his/hers opinion. If something is not quite right I change it and once it's approved I color it.
The costumer gets a big version of the picture and a little version is posted online.
Because of my small fees I share the rights to the picture along with the costumer as a way to show off my skills. It would take a huge fee to give up my right but it can be done.

About using someone else character you usually just ask for permission to use their character and give them a copy of the finished picture.

I also do commissions but I normally don’t ask for commissions from other artists. I use Paypal as my payment method, and I also offer my customers the option to make some changes to their commissions during the sketch stages or any of the other stages. But I’ve only been doing commissions for a year now and I’m starting to go digital with my artwork.

I don’t really have the proper means to professionally advertise myself and my services, so I don’t get very many customers but that isn’t the only reason I don’t have many customers. The other reason I don’t get very many customers is because most of all the people who want me to draw something for them they cannot pay me or they cannot afford my services.

In the future I hope to properly advertise myself and get some more customers and to also get a better audience. And to also get some better customers because most of the people who ask me to draw something for them they almost always try to get a commission for free and I cannot allow that. But I can understand where they are coming from on that end because I use to be unemployed and had no money at all.

So as an artist who is trying to make a name for himself and do what he loves to do most in this world, I still have much to learn. I am a pretty reasonable guy and I don’t mind helping others artistically but I need to make a living too.
