Heh, the first thought I had when I saw Tsavo's work-in-progress picture was "I wouldn't want to run into that guy in a dark alley". Laughing Seriously, Tsavo, lookin' tough, though I suppose you'd have to be to run a tavern.

I really like how his build is so different from most other male characters we've seen in the comic so far. It makes him look really special.

I was trying to think of what I wanted to say, and I think that this summarized it best. I like how every character really is fairly unique on this site. Of course, it comes down to the individual roleplayer. How much detail you provide about your character, and how different you want to be from everybody else does seem to affect your character design.

I also like how different Tsavo looks in comparison to another lion member's avatar... he didn't end up being just Tursi without a mane...

Oddly enough, he sort of reminds me of the character Viktor from the Lackadaisy webcomic.

A lion who shaves? Intriguing... But then, I guess he certainly does not need it to look larger.

I'm only assuming Tsavo takes his name from the region of Kenya where maneless male lions are the norm, and where the famous Tsavo Maneaters story comes from. Our Tsavo wouldn't need to shave...

Definately, looks outstanding, and very different. And lions without a flowing mane are rare enough, Tsavo pulls it off very well.

Wow, all these comments and I haven't been able to log in since this morning. Thanks everyone.

First off, Vanessa the braids are great.

Sorry to disappoint. No Austrian accent for Tsavo. A disillusioned ex-soldier born to a British military family while on African soil. So he'd sound quite British.

I haven't read Lackadaisy but on your recommendation I'm going to check it out. The original for the character was a take off of the Fantasy setting cliche where the old adventurer comes back to town, opens a tavern, and hangs his old ax up behind the bar. Once I'm not really sure where all the Conrad influence came from when I started writing the history.

Johnny is correct Tsavo doesn't cut his mane. The lions in the Tsavo region are maneless. The most famous being the two lions that inspired the Ghost and the Darkness. Both of which are on display in the Chicago Field Museum.
But to this day there are still maneless lions that turn man eater. I have to admit the subject fascinates me.

Doh-ho ho. *Playfully trades fists with Xebulon back and forth in a fake pummel kind of way* I know what your getting at.

Looking good Tsavo. I know it'll still take some getting used to for me to see a maneless lion, but its interesting none the less.

Your braided goatee reminds me of Beowulf though. You off to slay Fafnir?

Which is oddly fitting. The maneless lions are usually larger and heavier then the savanna lions. They have smaller harems and don't rely on the females to do all the hunting.

Well someone has to fit the profile since you wouldn't. Razz

Though, I'll find it quite entertaining if Tsavo was a dwarf like Ghimli. I think him being only about 1.3 meters tall would make him quite different from the rest of the members here.

I'm beginning to wish I hadn't decided on a more athletic build.. Razz

Y'know, it's odd how different animals' family units can be totally different, however closely related the species are. Those maneless lions compared to their maned counterparts, for instance.

I'm currently reading a book that is debating the maneless lions may be a different species then the normal lion. The Tsavo lions seeming to be closer to the pre-historic counterpart.
But region has a lot to do with it. Tsavo is full of thick, barbed underbrush and the lions have to rely more on Cape Buffalo for food then other lions.

And Mystic I'm sorry to disappoint. I'll try to slouch or something. Very Happy

Some info about mane growth in lions I found on that dubious source of knowledge, Wikipedia.
Quote:
Scientists once believed that the distinct status of some subspecies could be justified by morphology, including the size of the mane. Morphology was used to identify subspecies such as the Barbary Lion and Cape Lion. Research has suggested, however, that environmental factors influence the color and size of a lion's mane, such as the ambient temperature. The cooler ambient temperature in European and North American zoos, for example, may result in a heavier mane. Thus the mane is an inappropriate marker for identifying subspecies. The males of the Asiatic subspecies, however, are characterized by sparser manes than average African lions.
Still, one of the theories about why Tsavo lions are maneless is that it has to do with hormones, specifically testosterone levels found in lions. This was taken from a National Geographic article...
Quote:
Manelessness might also be due to hormone levels, Kays said. High testosterone levels inhibit hair growth in human males and leads to male pattern baldness. Similarly, Tsavo male lions may be genetically predisposed to high levels of testosterone. The high hormone levels may also explain the heightened aggressive tendencies seen in these lions.

....

The role of the mane has never been firmly established. It was thought the manes were selected for during evolution because they attracted females, intimidated other males, and protected the neck regions during fights. But the findings in Tsavo indicate that the maneless males are certainly not starved for female attention and actually command larger prides than maned lions.

The environmental cost of having a mane in Tsavo may be greater than in other areas, suggests Kays.
So there you go, our Tsavo is such a maneless stud because he's got more of the manly-man juice running through his veins. ¡Mucho Machismo!
