Saint Patrick's Day is an annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick, who is one of the patron saints of Ireland. The Days is the national holiday of Ireland, it is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland. It is also celebrated in Canada, Great Britain, Australia, the United States, and New Zealand as a public holiday but is also widely celebrated in other countries even though it is not an official holiday.
Both Christians and non-Christians celebrate the non secular version of the holiday by wearing green, eating Irish food and/or green foods imbibing Irish Drinks and attending parades. |

"Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá ’le Pádraig or Lá Fhéile Pádraig), colloquially St. Paddy's Day or simply Paddy's Day, is an annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick (circa AD 385–461), one of the patron saints of Ireland, and is generally celebrated on 17 March." -Wikipedia

Paddy=Patty
Basically, two different ways to abbreviate the name "Patrick".
Anyway, in the U.S. the day is used to celebrate Irish-American heritage and the contributions of Irish immigrants and their descendents to our country. At least, that's the official reason for the holiday. The unofficial reason for the holiday is to drink copious amounts of alcohol.
Actually, now that I think of it, most holidays here in the U.S. end up being tied in with alcohol consumption, somehow. Specifically, the Mexican holiday "Cinco de Mayo", celebrated by Mexican-Americans much the same way that St. Patty's day is celebrated by Irish-Americans, has also devolved into a holiday for binge-drinkers. The difference? You wear lots of green and may drink lots of Irish whiskey and Guiness beer on St. Patty's Day, while you may wear a sombrero and drink lots of tequila and Corona beer on Cinco de Mayo. Both are days of pride and heritage to their peoples, but St. Patrick's Day is derived from a Catholic holiday, while Cinco de Mayo commemorates a military victory over the French and is somewhat akin to the U.S.'s "Independence Day" in certain parts of Mexico. |

Not even a holiday can get me to drink Corona. A nice Dos Equis works too though. |
