Reading through some of the stuff said here has got me wondering whether it would have really been possible for Tadelesh to learn bojutsu. Was that also outlawed in the 1890s (the time Tadelesh would have been learning it, if it is indeed possible)? If it was, what ways would it have been possible for him to learn? My original idea was that he met someone who had learned it while travelling (said learned person also travelling around) - is that feasible?

No the martial art itself was not outlawed or banned however it was in a serious decline and was nearly lost at this point due to the newer mentality of becoming more "Westernized".It would've been possible to study from a person particularly in Okinawa at the time.As far as a traveling master,it may have been possible if they were doing Musha shugyo or "Warrior's pilgrimage".

All right, thanks for that. Where and why would they travel on this pilgrimage?

They would travel through Okinawa and Japan to test their skills without the school and the people inside(other students,masters,etc.).It was the equivalent of the western version known as the "knight's Errant"in which a knight traveled alone and challenged others to prove his skills before returning to his kingdom.

Hmm. I'll need to think on that, then, if I ever get round to doing a proper background. In your opinion, which would be more likely?

More likely would've been a school as opposed to the wandering warrior. This based on the history of the country at the time.

All right. So if I have him actually learning bojutsu, the best idea is for him to stay in Okinawa for a few years? Thanks!

Oh, and I noticed there was discussion of learning Western styles rather than Eastern styles (such as boxing, wrestling and such). Tadelesh was schooled briefly in some of the more refined, such as fencing. He didn't master them, though.

Yes it is a good idea just keep in mind that masters at this point and time were very selective of their students and having an outsider learn these techniques requires some good convincing. You often had to learn to be humble, learn humility, and respect before they would teach you.

The discussion was about how many of our newer members were learning an Asian martial art when they're clearly from the west(European or American)and didn't know any western type of martial arts such as fencing,boxing,wrestling,etc..It was not meant to be an insult to anybody all Johnny and I were asking for is a plausible story as to how the character learned such techniques.

Fair enough. I'm sure Tadelesh could be convincing enough, though not sure how I'd write that. Ah well, something to think about if and when I come to writing.

if you want some advice to simplify writing your fursona a bit, try this. make a work in progress thread for your fursona, then let those who wish to help you critique it for you. thats what im doing right now(still in the Work in progress stage, unfortunatly Rolling Eyes )

Nah, I've done all that. This is only for if I want to do a full-story background.
