I think that I've been having similar thoughts. I think that to me, it's probably in part because I'm reminded of stories where ravens were kept as pets or messengers by wizards and such. I've often seen them portrayed as such in various stories, and I think that might be one of the reasons why I too tend to think of them as some mysterious birds. |

actually after giving it some more thought i would also (although im abit embaresed to say it this) tend to associate ravens with insanity, and an omen of death, or some misfortune(damn you Edger Allen Poe...) |

Well, considering what I know of ravens, my picture would be of a scholarly individual (Mostly do to Odin's ravens, at least I think he had two) Then add a bit of a more dark demeanor, leaning more on a negative viewpoint and overall futility to life. Not exactly the most appealing personality, unless one prefers a darker tone.
Also, Marx, sorry for scarring your poor fragile little mind, however I wanted to add a comment fitting for Henk. |

[quote="Shadow_Twisted"](Mostly do to Odin's ravens, at least I think he had two) quote]
Odin DID have two ravens. They were called Hugin and Munin. Every night they returned to Odin and told him what was happening in both the human world and the world of the gods.
How do I know that? Well... my people was once the migthy vikings. |

Ravens were also important to some Native American tribes, mostly along the Pacific Northwest, and were seen as intelligent, wise, and sometimes very tricky. In fact, Ravens were synonymous with Coyotes in many trickster myths.
Other "trickster" species from around the world include:
Monkeys (Sun Wukong/Son Goku from the Asian "Journey to the West" legend)
Rabbits (Brer Rabbit of the American "Uncle Remus" stories, or Nanabozhoo of Anishnaabe folklore)
Foxes (Reynard the Fox of French folklore)
Cats (Puss in Boots of European fairytale fame)
Spiders (Anansi of West African and Caribbean folklore, or Iktomi of Lakota folklore) |

It's... interesting the way people think of animals and what human traits get assigned to them.
What Johnny said concerning 'trickster' species is a prominent example. But you can see that most of them tend to have quite similar traits. Foxes, coyotes, cats, and spiders are all generally small, solitary predators. This ecological niche forces upon them the traits of curiousity, adaptability, and a greater proclivity to taking chances than herd predators. They usually hunt by stealth, cunning, or taking any scrap they can find. So I suppose it is not surprising these forms are given to playful or cunning spirits or deities.
I also find it amusing the way species are given male/female preferences. But it does at least seem to follow a basic pattern... If you have two species that look roughly similar, like wolf/fox or rat/mouse, the larger, stronger, and more 'fearsome' species is taken by men while women prefer the 'cuter' and smaller species. Like here, more male badgers and wolverines and more female ferrets and skunks. |

Stoats are usually depicted as a female dancer.
Opossums..Well, in my random comic type thnigy that is not on the internet, there is an opossum named Karma, apprentice to Karysma, and Karysma is a stoat, and dancer, but Karma's a klutz.
So...opossums are klutzy, but stoats are graceful. |

Very nice Kommy, but what about the reptiles? Can you make a statement with them like you did with the mamels, please?
|
Hope you don't mind if I answer instead of Kommy...
Reptiles are a relative rarity among furries (well, except dragons, those seem to be exceedingly popular), so I tend to view people with reptilian or avian fursonas as being fairly unique, unpredictable, and perhaps eccentric individuals. You seem to fit those criteria quite well, Henk.
Snakes in particular I feel are mysterious, almost mystical creatures, as well as powerful and graceful. Personality wise, I'd see a snake person as driven, goal-oriented, and perhaps a bit fierce... definitely not someone you want to piss off. In many cultures, snakes are revered as powerful beings, and used as symbols of power, especially cobras in India and among the ancient Egyptians. Still, there's an almost instinctive fear among most mammals of the silent, dangerous serpent, and it's no secret that other cultures have a much more negative view of snakes, seeing them as dangerous, evil, and even tricky.
It's very interesting to see how the same animal can be viewed in completely different ways by different people, especially depending upon culture or popular opinion. Another reason I'm happy I picked coyote as my fursona species... in some cultures, he's a hero, but in others he's the villain. That sort of dichotomy just fits so well with the image of Native Americans/American Indians, especially during the late 1800's. |

once agian, im glad i choose a raven, becuase my mian goal in marx's creation was to be unique.
and henk, i would like to know why you choose a cobra as you avatar? its just that is such an uncommon chioce that there has to be an interesting reason. if you would be so kind as to enlighten me, sir.
on an unrelated topic, now that you mention it johnny, i am curious as to why dragons are so popular among furries |

Dragons?
Cause tehy can easily be made into hot, sexy creatures.
If you want proof, go check out L.A. Banks's book 'bite the Bullet' pgs.334-335.
Very sexy and hot. |

The mention of manatees made me instantly think of this: http://www.hornymanatee.com/
I don't understand why rabbits are so uncommon, especially here. Rabbits are usually associated with having extremely high sex drives, so I don't get why there aren't many around! Personally, they're high on my list of favourite species - mainly thanks to Lola from Looney Tunes.
As for female wolves and dogs - I've seen many on FA. I won't speculate why there aren't any here, as I have no idea.
Back to one of the questions asked - I believe by Symphony - did the characteristics associated with your character's species aid your decision to choose that species? Well, yes and no. When I first created Tadelesh, it had nothing to do with it. When I was deciding which of my characters to use as my fursona, in retrospect, I think it had a part. I just love tigers - they're so beautiful, majestic, mysterious. The males are also pretty much loners - once they grow up, they go out on their own and find their own place in the world. I won't bore you with any more detail; I will say, though, that tiger characteristics, including those I've mentioned, are a huge part of Tadelesh. |

Tigers are indeed beautiful animals, Tadelesh. Those things you mention, I can't definately see how they fit well with the impression you've given of your fursona.
Thinking about it, I'm actually a little surprised that they aren't as popular as canines. Tiger is also a good species for female characters. In the pinups section there's a lovely tigress that Vanessa did for someone.
I can't remember if I've answered the question about species and fursona creation myself. I might have done that somewhere, but I think I'll do so again. My choice of a mare was in part because of the things I assoicate with them. I think of elegance, grace, and a certain amount of strength when thinking of them. That was what I wanted for my fursona. The whole picture of a a graceful woman with a body sculpted by regular exercise, and long powerful legs. That's Constance. She's no petite girl, but is a tall, athletic lady. I mostly think of equine characters as tall as well, except for ponies of course. And I have to admit that I tend to picture female equines as having large breasts, something I wanted for my fursona. |

My reason for my choice in the Doberman pincher dog Are meny. They well known to be very loyal, as well as lean, muscular, and intelagent. Also one of my insperations was from one time when i was young, me and my sister was laying on the floor watching tv with the front door open, (the AC was shot and summer in Pheonix Arizona is hoter than Satan's ass crack.) And a Doberman pincher came in and layed down between me and my sister and watched the TV along with the two of us, untell my mom came into the liveing room and screamed, in witch the dog got up and walked off. Also enuth insperation for me was the story Dreizehn from the first volume of Pet Shop of Horrors.
Also i wanted to protray a Doberman pincher charicter as a good guy, Also i thought it would be funny to have him in an RP, scream out loud when he sees a hypodermic needle (Im thinking about haveing him have a phobia of hypodermic needles even thou he is abble to command and fight in the front line. Trypanophobia i bleave they call it.) |

Perhaps some clarification is needed then; it made sense in my mind, at least.
Do I really need to elaborate on them being beautiful and how that relates to Tadelesh?
Majestic, well, he grew up as an aristocrat, and still sometimes acts like one; that says majestic to me, though perhaps I'm taking the word too literally there (plus he's quite nimble).
Mysterious - he makes a living by tricking people, and he doesn't give much information about himself to strangers; I'd say he's pretty mysterious.
Male tigers generally leave their families once they grow up, and explore until they find themselves a new home; Tadelesh ran away from home, explored a few parts of the world, then found himself in Bon Bon. It may not necessarily be permanent, but it's home to him for now.
Tigers - male ones, at least - are usually solitary creatures (as hinted above). Tadelesh is mostly solitary: he may socialise quite a bit, but rarely gets to know anyone more than superficially.
I hope that's made things make more sense to you, Symphony. If I think of anything else, I'll mention it too.
Oh, and there's also the tigress who did a Striptease; not sure if she's the same one as in the pin-up or not. |

Heh, sorry about the confusion. I actually meant that I can definately see how those things fit with the impression you've given of your fursona. that stupid 't just changed the meaning completely.
It made perfect sense by your first post, but it's still nice with the clarification. |
